The Institute of Training, Research and Operational Consultancy for Tourism (INSTRTOCT) is institution of higher education, with a philosophy “dedicated to teaching quality hospitality management programmes, which meet the needs of today’s hospitality industry” and setting standards for the future. The overall vision is to develop a university institution concentrating on the service delivery sector concerned with tourism and hospitality and its management.
In order to deliver the latest tourism and hospitality knowledge to young and talented Iranian applicants, INSTROCT has decided to co-operate a joint program of relevant major with partner universities abroad. The benefits of the ‘blended learning’ approach are flexibility and customisation of teaching and learning. Interaction between foreign professors with international experience and students equipped with local knowledge often generate a synergy which is conducive to continuous development.
Following a visit to INSTROCT’s educational, academic and administrative facilities by Swedish Luleå University team, as well as INSTROCT good reputation of partnering with University of Strathclyde and Metropolitan during the past years, two parties came to an agreement to conduct international joint master program.
As a result Luleå University of Technology, a leading university in the fields of hospitality and tourism, together with INSTROCT in Tehran, Iran, settled a joint one-year MSc program in Business Administration with specialization in Tourism and Hospitality Management since 2009 to welcome motivated students.
Such a joint Master programme has one intake per year; however; the admission office operates on a rolling admission process. As such, there is no explicit deadline for applications for a particular intake. However, given the limited number of places in the programs and the interview process, we recommend candidates initiate the application process as early as possible.
The program aims to assist students in developing
• Knowledge in business administration and service management
• The ability to use and develop concepts and applications within Hospitality the Service industry
• The ability to lead and develop organizations in the Hospitality and Service industry
• The ability to solve unstructured problems related to the field of Hospitality and Service Management as well as identification of solutions within the research in the field.
Admission Requirements and Criteria
- 1. The applicant must have:
Holding a Bachelor’s degree of 180 ECTS (university credit hrs/point) out of which at least 60 should be in the area of business administration.
Holding a Bachelor’s degree of 180 ECTS (university credit hrs/points), and at least 4 years of managerial work experience which must include financial responsibilities.

• A copy of a valid passport
• Results of an English proficiency test. The tests accepted and the minimum scores are:

All eligible candidates will be interviewed by a team of faculty members from Luleå University of Technology and the Partner University.
Details of Syllabus and Teaching Methods to be Employed
The structure of the program is based on 6 courses with a total of 45 points, and an MSc
dissertation of 15 points, during a one- year period. The year-long program is divided into
4 quarters in one year.
Hotel and Hospitality
|7.5||This course covers general theory of marketing with special emphasize on service marketing. Marketing is seen as a management philosophy and as a set of techniques focused on customer needs and motives. The course also covers ideas and models from other marketing fields of importance for the Service industry, such as relationship marketing and e-commerce.|
Food and Beverage
|7.5||The course will familiarize students with the basic knowledge of service management, such as service design, service operations, service strategies, and so on. It is the intention of this course to provide students with the followings: (a) Acquired knowledge of service management topics and their successful implementation in a business setting; (b) Practical ability to apply service management theory to actual situations; and (C) Recognition of the importance of service management research and modeling for successful business operations.|

15The thesis project is executed by two students. The work has to be based on scientific method and relevant theory. Selection of research topic must be approved by the examiner who will in turn assign the supervisor for the project.
Consistent with the quality standard policy of Luleå University of Technology, no class is expected to exceed 40 students, i.e. large enough to provide diversity of experience, yet small enough to encourage discussion, creating a cooperative but dynamic learning environment. Electronic library resources of Luleå University of Technology will be made available on-line to both students and faculty active in the program. Via LTU Library students can access scholarly and research databases.
All students are enrolled at Luleå and registered with University. Enrolment forms are forwarded to the Partnership Office who enters the student data onto the student record system and issue student number, student cards and online resources access details. All students and program faculty are given access to the Fronter learning management system; a learning management system. Via this interactive online platform, virtual classrooms can be created. Teachers can upload material they wish to share with the students, and contact students, etcetera. Teachers will be provided a username, password and a course classroom if they wish to use this system.
Learning and Development
All courses require attendance over a two-semester period. The courses include lectures, tutorials, discussions, seminars and presentations in conjunction with either tutorials or workshops. The lecture style tends to be participative, and lectures frequently incorporate case analysis and discussions. Thus, centred on problem-based learning and action-learning, the learning methods emphasise the use of case studies, discussions, presentations, group work and digital media. Computer and other simulations are used. The student is expected to undertake independent study involving reading, research, personal investigation and completion of tutor-directed tasks.
The program will also include visits to various organizations, so that the students can see for themselves the application of theoretical learning. Additionally, industry practitioners are invited as guest lecturers to share their experiences and best practices.
Assessment of Student’s Performance and Achievements
There is a range of assessments across the program and within each of the courses. While assessment includes oral presentations and written examinations the main assessment vehicle consists of a series of individual written assignments – reports, case study analysis, business plans – prepared by the student and submitted online by a given deadline. Each course ends with the submission of two pieces of work. Good student performance depends on evidence of individual research, extensive reading, critical thinking and creative application of theories to real-life problems and situations.
One principle of the program’s assessment strategy is that course assignments will, as much as possible, allow the student to choose the context, organization or scenario in which to apply the theories learned.
The thesis must demonstrate the student’s ability to plan and conduct research at the Master’s level. This is an important element of the program which the student undertakes independently, but with support and guidance from his or her thesis supervisor.
